Mark Pauling began The Investment Shop (Australia) Pty Ltd in 1999 as a specialist financial planning business. Mark saw a need to offer a wider range of services to his clients that would complement his financial planning business.

In 2009 Jason Ale joined the office. Jason Ale had been running a small personalised accountancy business for a number of years and was also looking to offer his clients additional services. The successful informal joint venture between the Investment Shop (Australia) Pty Ltd and Vanguard Accountants Pty Ltd continued until June 2011, when the arrangement was formalised by the creation of Vanguard Accountants & Financial Planners incorporating the best elements of businesses. On the 1st October 2012 all subsidiaries formally merged under the one banner to create Vanguard Group Pty Ltd.

In early 2012 the service offering was expanded to include legal services.
